A Dirty Predator, the Mud Dauber Wasp

Picture
This wasp is classified as the Mud Dauber Wasp. The only benefit of having these plastered on your home, is to keep away the Black Widow Spider (their prey). The females build nests out of mud, which hardens over time. In this nest, they lay a single egg. They catch a Black Widow Spider by stinging it with their venom. This doesn't kill the spider, but rather paralyzes it. They bring the disabled spider back into their mud lair and lay the egg on or beside the spider. This wasp will then seal the hole, burying the spider inside to be used for food when their offspring hatches. Once they seal the hole, they fly away to build another nest, continuing the cycle.

Sod Webworm = Disaster!

Picture
Hopefully your yard doesn't look like this, but if it does, it's not the end of the world. It just means that you have a major infestation of a Utah turf pest called the Sod Webworm. The good news is- it's treatable. Once the larvae of the Sod Webworm hatches into the soil, it feeds on grass, thus, destroying patches of your lawn. You can usually tell if the damage is from the Webworm or from a... "land mine" (pet droppings), or an accidental overdose of weed-killer, by simply pulling out a dead patch of grass. If the grass is pulled up easily without any resistance and you see small, light-colored moths, you have a case of the Sod Webworm.

The life-cycle of the Sod Webworm:
  • Winter- No to little activity while larvae is in immature silk lined chambers.
  • Spring- The weather heats up and the larvae matures as they eat grass and turf, which happens mostly during the night. The females produce approx 60 eggs per day for two weeks. The eggs hatch one week later.
  • Late Summer and Fall- Once the weather gets hot, the hatched eggs will feed on the grass for approx 1-2 months before becoming an adult, and the cycle continues two more times before the winter freeze.

If you don't want your lawn looking like a checker board, get this issue resolved immediately by proper watering, fertilizing, aerating, and having the correct pest control products applied to the surviving areas or your yard.

The Boxelder Bug

It's that time of year again when the weather starts heating up and the Boxelder Bugs begin infesting your home. This pest is more of a nuisance than a damage-causing pest. During the spring and fall months, Boxelder Bugs are found on the south and west sides of your home, because they follow the direction of the sun. The sun heats up the south and west sides of the house and creates a cozy, warm living environment for these pests.

Boxelder trees produce the seeds that these pests feed on, hence the name. Fortunately they will not bite or sting. However, they can stain carpet and other fabrics. After they are found dead from exposure to our pest control product, be sure to sweep or vacuum them up before you accidentally step on them. If smashed, they will release a fowl odor, and create a stain mark on wood, cement, or other household features. ...Gross!

Carpenter Ants...Got Wood?

Picture

Carpenter Ants are actually classified with bees, wasps, sawflies, and other ants. Mostly because they have wings, but rarely fly. You know if you have carpenter ants if there are little piles of saw dust in random areas of your home. Usually, they are found in forest areas where there is a lot of wood. Most families that encounter carpenter ants will get them from bringing wood in from a forest or having wood piles by the side of the home. Unlike termites, they do not eat the wood, but rather feed on tiny insects, dead animals, honey dew, plant fluids, and other household food items. Unfortunately only 12 species of carpenter ants reside in Utah- YIKES! (sarcastic undertone)
