New Winter Treatment for 2013-2014

At Tanner Pest Control we are constantly looking to add value to our customers through innovation and better servicing methods. To offer an effective Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program we involve all methods: exclusion (sealing openings), mechanical (placing traps), preventative control (residual pest control products) and performing a thorough inspection during each treatment. The exclusion treatment is key during the winter service (December 1st through February 28th ).
The exterior winter treatment consists of sealing and treating any cracks and crevices. We do this by using clear silicone to seal off pipes, electrical cords, gas meters, A/C units, or any other openings that could pose a potential home to outside invaders. This treatment is key because it stops mice from squeezing through any openings the size of a dime (1/4 inch) or larger. The sealing treatment is also essential for insects such as ants, earwigs, centipedes, or arachnids to enter the home.

The other part of the exclusion treatment is to use copper mesh in weep holes or other large openings so that rodents can't chew through. The copper mesh is designed to be convenient for any hole or opening 1/2 inch or smaller. It doesn't stain or leave any residue if moisture is applied to the mesh.

The interior treatment consists of three parts. The first is the interior flush-out. We treat your baseboards, spot treat windows, window wells, and any other areas where pests reside. The products last 60-90 days so the winter treatment will last well into the spring before the next service. The second part is a wall injection. We inject dust into plumbing voids under the sink, or any other wall openings where pests might be nesting. The final application is a bait application for mice, rats, cockroaches, crickets, ants, moths, or spiders.

Rodents are very active during the winter months. Bait boxes for mice and rats are placed on the exterior or on the interior of the home. We monitor, inspect, and refill the bait stations for rodent activity each treatment. Bait boxes are an excellent way to prevent rodents from getting inside the residence because they enter the station, consume the commercial grade bait and then return to the nest.

Ants with Wings?

Picture
A common question customers ask is- "What are these ants with wings?" or they refer to them as "flying ants". These ants are commonly known as Carpenter Ants. They get the name not because they eat wood as termites do, but rather they dig through wood and kick it out behind them. More often than not customers discover a Carpenter Ant problem when they see small piles of sawdust. There's a term for this, it's called "frass". Frass is any evidence left from an unwanted pest, it could be mice droppings under the stove, it could be gopher mounds of dirt in your back yard, or silver dollar sized vole holes.

The best way to completely treat an entire colony of Carpenter Ants is to apply bait or use a termiticide. Commercial grade products are the only option to completely eradicate the colony. Inexpensive products that you find at the local hardware store only offer a surface treatment. They are often very weak with the low percentage of active ingredients, meaning they are highly diluted. Commercial grade products are the only effective means because they get to the "core" of the colony. Ants bring food to the colony where the queen resides. This food sharing is called Trophallaxis. When we bait an ant mound or the targeted area, the ants carry the products back into the nesting area and effectively eliminate the colony under the surface.

Another issue with attempting to treat for ants yourself is that the products that are most effective against ants need to be non-repellent. Over the counter products such as Home Defense Max or Spectracide Pro are repellents, they are much lower grade pyrethrin, thus only interrupting the colony and pushing ants into different unwanted locations. Baits attract, they haul it back to the nest. Termiticides have no odor, color, or taste. This is beneficial because it doesn't interrupt the trail of pheromones allowing the ants to come into contact with the product without realizing it.

What "Green" Pest Control Means to You!

Picture
There are four reasons why pest control companies have switched from traditional pest control to "green" pest control services.

  1. Green pest control companies practice environmentally friendly techniques such as handling products, application, and proper disposal of unnecessary products.
  2. The products that these companies use are home friendly for pets, children, and adults. The organic based products that we use are used in hospitals, day-cares, schools, and restaurants.
  3. These companies also have "green policies" such as recycling, fuel efficient service vehicles, close proximity operating areas, and strategies to go paperless.
  4. Green companies apply products only where needed. At Tanner Pest Control we use a product called Demand CS, which is very effective against targeted pests. The active ingredient has a slow release, which is healthier for the atmosphere. Other products break down much faster and release greater amounts of toxins into the environment.

At Tanner Pest Control we have always been and will forever be a "Green" Pest Control company. It is our privilege to give back to the environment and to provide home friendly products for homes and businesses.
