12 Rodent Tips You Should Implement Today

Action items for a rodent free environment
Picture
  • Empty exterior garbage cans and recycling bins every week.
  • Eliminate Bird Feeders- They love the food dropping on the ground.
  • Pick up all the fallen fruit from the fruit trees. Shake off the all the remaining fruit off the tree and discard it.
  • Feed pets inside home at set times and put away food and water in sealed containers. Pet food has Vitamin K which will heal rodents after they eat the bait. Rodents will hoard pet food. They collect it and store food for a long unwelcome stay.
  • Sanitation and removing clutter is vital for a rodent free environment.
  • Store any other food storage items in sealed containers.
  • Seal/Plug holes with mesh, steel wool or expanding foam. Rodents can get through small holes because of the occipital plate on the front skull (Mice size of a dime and Rat size of a quarter).
  • Eliminate bushes and ground cover around base of home.
  • Eliminate tree branches over roof to prevent climbing rodents to get into your attic.
  • Normally will take 2 weeks to 2 months to completely treat for Mice and Rats. Rats normally will take longer to treat.
  • Mice have poor sight and great audio perception. That's why they are always droppings against walls.
  • Mice will operate only 10-15 ft from food source. Rats have a greater distance 15-20 ft.

New Winter Treatment for 2013-2014

At Tanner Pest Control we are constantly looking to add value to our customers through innovation and better servicing methods. To offer an effective Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program we involve all methods: exclusion (sealing openings), mechanical (placing traps), preventative control (residual pest control products) and performing a thorough inspection during each treatment. The exclusion treatment is key during the winter service (December 1st through February 28th ).
The exterior winter treatment consists of sealing and treating any cracks and crevices. We do this by using clear silicone to seal off pipes, electrical cords, gas meters, A/C units, or any other openings that could pose a potential home to outside invaders. This treatment is key because it stops mice from squeezing through any openings the size of a dime (1/4 inch) or larger. The sealing treatment is also essential for insects such as ants, earwigs, centipedes, or arachnids to enter the home.

The other part of the exclusion treatment is to use copper mesh in weep holes or other large openings so that rodents can't chew through. The copper mesh is designed to be convenient for any hole or opening 1/2 inch or smaller. It doesn't stain or leave any residue if moisture is applied to the mesh.

The interior treatment consists of three parts. The first is the interior flush-out. We treat your baseboards, spot treat windows, window wells, and any other areas where pests reside. The products last 60-90 days so the winter treatment will last well into the spring before the next service. The second part is a wall injection. We inject dust into plumbing voids under the sink, or any other wall openings where pests might be nesting. The final application is a bait application for mice, rats, cockroaches, crickets, ants, moths, or spiders.

Rodents are very active during the winter months. Bait boxes for mice and rats are placed on the exterior or on the interior of the home. We monitor, inspect, and refill the bait stations for rodent activity each treatment. Bait boxes are an excellent way to prevent rodents from getting inside the residence because they enter the station, consume the commercial grade bait and then return to the nest.

Tis The Season

Did you know that September through April are the heaviest months when gophers, voles, mice, and rats are actively burrowing and trying to seek shelter (i.e. your home)? These particular pests don't hibernate in the winter like spiders do. They are a year round nuisance.

Below are some field mice that have had a bit too much bait to snack on this holiday season. As well as a freshly made gopher mound creeping up to eat the roots of a willow tree across the way. Fortunately our exclusion techniques on the exterior of homes and our mice/rat bait boxes make the winter season much more enjoyable by being rodent free!

4 Reasons You Need Pest Protection in the Winter

Picture
The question often brought up: "Why do we need pest control in the winter?". The simple answer is, there is not one pest control product that lasts an entire year. The longest lasting products on the market last up to 90 days before it wears off. With that said, there are four main reasons why pest protection is vital during the winter months.

  1. Rodents are more active in winter months and try to seek shelter/food (i.e. your home).  During the winter months the technician inspects for openings where potential rodents can enter inside seeking an unwelcome stay. He will make sure that all the traps and bait stations are full and check traps for any captured pests.
  2. Spiders hibernate during the winter months. They seek shelter in rocks, deep cracks, crevices, inside walls, garages and sheds. We treat all the cracks and crevices on the exterior (doors, windows, weep holes, and other openings) to ensure there isn't an entry point.
  3. Spider eggs and wasp nests are still present in the eaves during the winter months; although they are not active they are still alive inside the egg sac. We always sweep and inspect the eaves to make sure any potential pest activity is eliminated. By removing all the remaining webs and nests from the property it will allow for a more mild spring and summer with fewer stingers and biters.
  4. The interior of the home is the most important part of the four steps. Inside, there are eggs that have hatched from earwigs, ants, and spiders. The most effective treatment is to seal off all openings from the inside (doors, windows, window wells, and plumbing voids). We dust openings in the walls to prevent spiders from coming in through those access points.

By doing the following four steps your home will be fully protected all year long. Having a winter treatment will ensure that you have a lighter pest load in the spring, summer, and fall.
